The United States has deployed armed MQ-9 Reaper drones and approximately 200 military personnel to Nigeria in a major boost to ongoing counterterrorism operations in the country’s northern region.
According to a report by Reuters, the deployment was carried out at the request of Nigerian authorities to strengthen intelligence gathering, surveillance, and operational coordination against terrorist groups.
Officials from both the United States and Nigeria confirmed that the mission is strictly non-combat, focusing on intelligence support and military training rather than direct battlefield engagement.
A U.S. defence official described the move as a “shared security effort,” emphasizing that American troops will not participate in combat operations or drone strikes.
Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters also confirmed the presence of U.S. forces. The Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, revealed that the personnel are currently operating from an airfield in Bauchi State.
He explained that the deployment is part of a broader collaboration under a newly established U.S.-Nigeria intelligence fusion cell, designed to provide real-time intelligence to Nigerian troops on the frontlines.
“Our U.S. partners remain in a strictly non-combat role, enabling operations led by Nigerian authorities,” Uba stated.
The MQ-9 Reaper drones—known for their long endurance of over 27 hours—are capable of both surveillance and precision strikes. However, officials stressed that the drones in Nigeria are being used solely for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.
The development comes amid renewed attacks by insurgent groups, including Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province, which continue to pose serious security threats across northern Nigeria.
Recent reports indicate that suicide bombers targeted a military garrison town in the northeast earlier this month, underlining the persistent danger posed by extremist elements.
Military authorities noted that the duration of the U.S. deployment will depend on ongoing assessments by both nations, with a strong focus on enhancing Nigeria’s capacity to combat terrorism through intelligence-sharing and advanced training.
This latest move follows previous U.S. military involvement in Nigeria, including reported airstrikes against ISIS-linked targets during the administration of Donald Trump, as well as earlier troop deployments aimed at strengthening counterterrorism operations.
Security analysts say the renewed U.S.-Nigeria partnership signals increasing international concern over the evolving threat of insurgency in West Africa.
