Saudi Arabia has ordered the immediate expulsion of Iran’s military attaché and four other diplomatic officials, giving them just 24 hours to leave the country in a dramatic escalation of tensions across the Middle East.
According to reports, the Saudi foreign ministry confirmed that those affected include the Iranian military attaché, an assistant military attaché, and three additional embassy staff, all of whom have been declared persona non grata. While the government did not provide detailed reasons for the decision, the move signals a sharp deterioration in already fragile relations between the two regional powers.
This latest development comes amid rising instability across the Middle East, where long-standing rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran continues to fuel geopolitical and sectarian divisions. Both nations have been locked in a struggle for influence across key regions, including Yemen, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon.
Recent events have further intensified tensions, particularly with the ongoing conflict involving Israel and Gaza, drawing in multiple state and non-state actors. Western and Gulf nations have repeatedly accused Iran of backing armed groups across the region—claims Tehran has consistently denied.
Security concerns have also heightened following reports of increased military activity. The United Kingdom alleged that Iran launched ballistic missiles targeting a joint US-UK base in Diego Garcia, though the attack reportedly failed. Iranian officials have denied any involvement.
Meanwhile, missile strikes reportedly hit southern Israeli cities, leaving scores injured, as the cycle of retaliation continues. In response, the United States and Israel have carried out coordinated strikes on multiple locations inside Iran, including Tehran and key nuclear-linked sites such as Natanz.
Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation has condemned the attacks, describing them as “criminal” and accusing both nations of targeting its nuclear infrastructure.
Amid the growing crisis, the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has expressed concern and indicated readiness to support efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route Iran has threatened to shut.
Several global powers, including the UK, France, Germany, the UAE, and Bahrain, have also condemned alleged Iranian actions targeting vessels and infrastructure in the Gulf.
Analysts warn that Saudi Arabia’s expulsion of Iranian officials could trigger retaliatory steps from Tehran, further worsening diplomatic ties and increasing the risk of a wider regional conflict.
