The political crisis in Rivers State took a dramatic turn on Thursday as the Rivers State House of Assembly formally commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh, further escalating the ongoing power struggle within the state.
The impeachment process was initiated during a plenary session presided over by the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule. During the sitting, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, read a formal notice of allegations and claims of gross misconduct against Governor Fubara on the floor of the Assembly.
Lawmakers disclosed that no fewer than 26 members of the Assembly signed the notice, which they said was prepared in accordance with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution governing impeachment procedures.
Speaker Amaewhule announced that the notice of allegations would be formally served on Governor Fubara within the next seven days, in line with legislative rules and due process.
In a related development, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, also read a separate notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Deputy Governor Ngozi Oduh, signalling that the impeachment effort extends to both top officials of the state government.
The latest move comes against the backdrop of a prolonged and bitter political rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who remains a dominant political force in Rivers State. The dispute has continued to divide the state’s political structure and fuel intense rivalry within the ruling political camp.
Observers say the impeachment proceedings reflect the deepening breakdown of relations between both camps, with the Assembly now emerging as a major battleground in the struggle for political control in the oil-rich state.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has also weighed in on the unfolding crisis. The party stated that Wike would “certainly be under” Governor Fubara should he decide to join the APC, stressing that political authority is determined by current office holders, not past positions.
The remarks were made by the APC’s Director of Information, Bala Ibrahim, during an interview monitored on Trust TV.
With impeachment notices now officially issued, political tension in Rivers State is expected to intensify in the coming days as constitutional timelines begin to run and responses are anticipated from both the governor and his deputy.
