Tension escalated violently in on Friday night after three suspected killers of a traditional ruler were lynched and set ablaze by an angry mob in what has been described as a case of jungle justice.
The victims were allegedly linked to the killing of the traditional head of Kwallak community, known as Ponzhi Kwallak, who was murdered just 24 hours earlier in his residence during an armed attack.
According to local sources, the attackers stormed the monarch’s home on Thursday night, robbed him of his motorcycle and mobile phone, and killed him before fleeing the scene. The brutal incident triggered widespread outrage across the community.
Residents reportedly launched a search operation that led to the arrest of the three suspects while they were attempting to dispose of the stolen motorcycle believed to belong to the slain traditional ruler.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the suspects allegedly confessed to the crime during questioning by community members. However, the situation quickly spiralled out of control as a group of agitated youths overpowered attempts to hand them over to security operatives.
The suspects were subsequently burnt alive near a local government secretariat, as shocked residents watched the horrific scene unfold.
While some members of the community justified the act as revenge for the killing of their traditional ruler, others strongly condemned the resort to mob justice, describing it as unlawful and dangerous.
Security authorities, including the in Plateau State, had yet to issue an official statement at the time of filing this report.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the rising cases of extrajudicial killings in Nigeria, where frustrated communities sometimes take the law into their own hands due to delays in formal justice processes.
Human rights observers continue to warn that such actions undermine the rule of law and could further escalate cycles of violence in affected regions.
