A political storm is brewing in as a local pressure group, Nsukka Dị̀ ọyị̀, has called for the immediate resignation of the state chairman of the (APC), Dr. Martin Chukwunwike, over allegations of candidate imposition and divisive political conduct.
The group accused the APC chairman of openly endorsing a preferred senatorial aspirant for the Enugu North Senatorial District, a move they claim has triggered tension within the party and raised concerns of possible political unrest.
The controversy stems from a video in which Chukwunwike allegedly backed a former Chairman of the Enugu State Housing Corporation, Ikeje Asogwa, as his preferred candidate for the forthcoming senatorial election. The endorsement has since sparked backlash from party members and stakeholders across the district.
Reacting to the development, the coordinator of Nsukka Dị̀ ọyị̀, Chief Ezeja Ikechukwu, described the chairman’s action as “reckless and divisive,” warning that it could destabilise the already sensitive political atmosphere in the region.
He argued that a state party chairman is expected to unite members, not promote personal preferences that could fracture internal cohesion.
According to the group, the endorsement of Asogwa has further deepened mistrust within the party, with questions also raised about the former official’s competence and track record in public service.
The group cited alleged structural defects in a school project executed in Igboeze South Local Government Area under Asogwa’s supervision, describing it as evidence of poor accountability and management.
Nsukka Dị̀ ọyị̀ insisted that leadership positions require competence, credibility, and grassroots acceptance, warning that any attempt to impose unpopular candidates would backfire politically.
They further urged relevant security agencies to investigate the allegations surrounding the endorsement and the referenced public projects, stressing the need for accountability among political actors.
The group also called on the national leadership of the APC to urgently intervene, restore internal democracy, and prevent further escalation of tensions in Enugu North Senatorial District.
Political observers say the development reflects growing internal disagreements within party structures ahead of future elections in the region.
