A Lagos-based contractor, Dr. Chukwuemeka Chigozie Linus, has reportedly been arrested by police operatives in Anambra State in connection with a disputed ₦4 billion government contract, amid allegations of pressure for illegal payments and contract irregularities.
Sources familiar with the development claim that the arrest followed his refusal to allegedly surrender 15% of the contract value as an unofficial payment to certain individuals linked to the project.
According to accounts from insiders, Dr. Linus maintained that the contract should be executed transparently and in line with due process, a position that reportedly triggered tensions with some officials involved in the project’s administration.
The contract is said to have been handled during an administration connected to the Anambra State Secretariat, with coordination reportedly tied to government project oversight structures.
Sources further alleged that the contractor was taken from a medical facility while receiving treatment and transported to Anambra State by police operatives, despite being in a fragile health condition at the time of arrest.
The situation has raised concerns among associates of the businessman, who describe the action as retaliatory and aimed at pressuring him following his refusal to comply with alleged financial demands.
However, state officials have denied any wrongdoing. The Secretary to the Anambra State Government, Chiamaka Helen Nnake, stated that while the project was coordinated through her office, she had no knowledge of the alleged arrest or the reported kickback demands.
“I am not aware of these details,” she said when asked about the allegations.
Similarly, the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said he had no information regarding the reported arrest when contacted.
“I don’t have any information on this,” he stated.
The allegations come amid long-standing concerns over public procurement processes in Nigeria, where contractors frequently report informal demands, delays, and disputes tied to large government projects.
The Public Procurement Act mandates transparency and accountability in contract awards, but enforcement challenges continue to fuel allegations of corruption and abuse within the system.
As of press time, no official charge sheet or detailed statement has been released by the police or relevant government agencies regarding the arrest or the allegations surrounding the ₦4 billion contract.
