A woman, Mrs. Ezaegu Maria Nnenna, has accused her husband and a medical doctor in Cross River State of allegedly performing a surgical procedure on her without her consent, which she claims resulted in the removal or “tubal ligation” of one of her fallopian tubes following the birth of her fifth child in 2017.

Nnenna, who hails from Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State but resides in Calabar, Cross River State, alleged that the incident occurred at Immanuel Infirmary Hospital, Ikot Effanga, during childbirth under the care of a medical practitioner identified as Pastor Dr. A.M. Udoh.

According to her account, she was admitted for delivery on July 2, 2017, and was initially assured that she would undergo a normal childbirth process, as with her previous deliveries. However, she claimed that complications were not communicated to her before she was taken into surgery and placed under anesthesia.

She alleged that she later woke up to find bandages on her body, with no explanation given for the procedure performed. She further claimed that her family members were also denied clear information at the hospital at the time.

Nnenna said her health began to deteriorate after discharge, as she experienced persistent pain, abnormal bleeding, and other complications that later forced her to seek further medical attention at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.

According to medical findings she presented, a radiology report suggested that her right fallopian tube was not patent, indicating blockage or damage, while the left tube remained functional.

She further alleged that after repeated pressure for answers, the doctor eventually confirmed that her tube had been tied, while also suggesting she should speak with her husband regarding the decision. She also accused her husband of authorising the procedure.

The woman stated that she petitioned the police in 2021 over the incident, alleging that both her husband and the doctor admitted to certain aspects of the procedure during investigations, though she claimed the matter was not thoroughly pursued.

She added that the prolonged health complications have left her in continuous pain and emotional distress, and she is demanding justice and accountability for what she describes as a violation of her medical consent.

When contacted for response, the doctor reportedly said he could not clearly recall the details of the incident due to the time that had passed, adding that medical decisions at the time must have been based on clinical reasons.

The matter remains unresolved as the complainant continues to call for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the surgery.
