Oyo State Governor, , has assured residents that government and security agencies are intensifying efforts to secure the release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted during a violent attack in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The governor made the emotional statement during a visit to the affected community over the weekend, where he met with grieving families and residents still in shock over the incident. Addressing them directly, Makinde appealed for calm, patience, and continued cooperation with security operatives as rescue operations continue.
“I know you’re bleeding, I’m also bleeding in my heart,” the governor said, acknowledging the pain of families whose loved ones were taken during the attack.
He stressed that the operation to rescue the victims remains active but sensitive, noting that details could not be fully disclosed due to security implications.
“We are doing everything humanly possible to bring our children and teachers back,” Makinde said. “I plead for your understanding and continued prayers.”
The abduction occurred when armed assailants stormed schools in the Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire LGA, including LA Primary School and Community Grammar School in Ahoro-Esiele. The attackers reportedly fired sporadically, causing panic as they whisked away pupils, teachers, and other residents.
Following the incident, emotional scenes have continued to emerge from the community, with families pleading for urgent government intervention.
During the governor’s visit, a distraught woman pleaded for the safe return of her daughter-in-law, four grandchildren, and other victims, describing the abductees as innocent schoolchildren and teachers caught in the attack.
Similarly, the husband of the principal of Community High School, Esiele, broke down in tears while appealing for intensified rescue efforts, saying the ordeal has left families devastated.
“We are begging you, don’t get tired. Please bring them back safely,” he said, as Governor Makinde reportedly comforted him during the encounter.
Reports also indicate that some of the abducted victims have appeared in videos released by the kidnappers, where they were seen pleading for government intervention and calling for negotiations.
One of the victims, a teacher identified as Mary Akanbi, reportedly begged authorities to engage the abductors, saying the situation inside captivity had become increasingly dangerous.
Another victim, the school principal, warned that attempts to use force had worsened conditions for those held captive, urging authorities to consider dialogue to avoid further harm.
Governor Makinde reiterated that security agencies are working around the clock to ensure the safe return of all abducted persons, while also appealing for restraint in public commentary due to the sensitive nature of ongoing operations.
He also called on residents to remain hopeful, assuring that efforts were being coordinated at all levels of government.
The situation has continued to draw national attention as concerns grow over rising insecurity in parts of the country.
