Armed bandits have reportedly killed a teacher at Federal Government College, Anka, identified as Mustapha Yahaya Maru, despite receiving ransom payment from his family for his release.
The late teacher was abducted earlier this month while travelling to Anka in Zamfara State alongside several other passengers after gunmen intercepted their vehicle along the route.
According to sources familiar with the incident, the kidnappers initially demanded a huge ransom from the victim’s family, an amount said to be far beyond their financial capability.
After days of intense negotiations and desperate efforts, the family reportedly succeeded in raising the agreed ransom amount with hopes of securing Maru’s freedom.
However, in a tragic twist, the bandits allegedly killed the victim on Tuesday instead of releasing him after collecting the money.
The killing has thrown the Maru community, family members, friends, and colleagues into deep mourning, while also reigniting concerns over the worsening insecurity and rising cases of kidnapping across Zamfara State and other parts of Northern Nigeria.
Zamfara State has continued to witness repeated attacks by heavily armed criminal groups operating in rural communities and major highways, with residents frequently targeted for abduction, killings, and extortion.
In another recent attack, suspected bandits reportedly killed a driver, abducted two local government officials, and injured another passenger along Tashar Lawali Road in Talata Mafara Local Government Area.
Security sources disclosed that the attackers blocked the road near Jangebe District before opening fire on motorists and commuters travelling through the area.
Among those abducted were identified as Jamilu Sani, Director of Planning in Talata Mafara Local Government Area, and Muslimu Habibu, a councillor representing Jangebe Ward.
Another victim, Samaila Ladan, a registration officer attached to the Hajj Affairs Unit of the local government council, reportedly sustained a gunshot injury during the attack, while the vehicle driver, Lawali Hakimi, was killed at the scene.
The latest incident has further intensified calls on security agencies and the Federal Government to strengthen efforts toward tackling insecurity and protecting lives across the country.
