A Nigerian pilgrim participating in the 2026 Hajj exercise in Saudi Arabia has reportedly died during the movement of worshippers from Arafat to Muzdalifah, one of the most physically demanding stages of the annual Islamic pilgrimage.
The deceased, believed to be from Bauchi State, reportedly passed away in the early hours of Wednesday shortly after pilgrims arrived at Muzdalifah following prayers at Mount Arafat.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that Saudi security personnel alongside emergency medical officials immediately evacuated the body from the area as millions of Muslim faithful continued the overnight spiritual movement between the holy sites.
Sources at the scene revealed that two officials attached to the Bauchi State pilgrims’ contingent accompanied the evacuation team during the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the deceased pilgrim had yet to be officially confirmed by either Saudi authorities or Nigerian Hajj officials. The exact cause of death also remains unknown, as no formal medical report or official statement has been released regarding the incident.
The tragedy occurred amid intense weather conditions and the physically exhausting nature of the Hajj rites, particularly the movement between Arafat, Muzdalifah, and Mina, where pilgrims often endure overcrowding, long trekking distances, and extreme temperatures.
Health experts have repeatedly warned that elderly pilgrims and those with underlying medical conditions remain highly vulnerable to dehydration, exhaustion, and other health complications during the pilgrimage.
Thousands of Nigerian pilgrims are currently participating in the 2026 Hajj exercise under the supervision of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) alongside various state Muslim pilgrims welfare boards.
Meanwhile, Nigerian officials in Saudi Arabia continue to provide medical, welfare, and logistical support to pilgrims throughout the exercise, especially during peak movement periods between the holy sites.
Muzdalifah, located between Arafat and Mina, is one of the major stations during Hajj where pilgrims spend the night in the open before proceeding to Mina for the symbolic stoning ritual.
