A devastating ambush by insurgents has claimed the life of a senior Nigerian Army officer, as Boko Haram fighters launched a deadly हमला on troops in Borno State.
Military sources confirmed that Colonel I.A. Muhammad was killed during a coordinated overnight attack in Monguno, a key operational hub in the North-East counter-insurgency campaign.
According to frontline soldiers, the attack began late Sunday when insurgents targeted a Forward Operating Base (FOB) under the 242 Battalion, part of Sector 3 operations. The assault triggered an urgent call for reinforcement.
In response, the late Colonel reportedly mobilised troops and personally led a mission to support the embattled soldiers — a move described by colleagues as courageous and committed.
However, tragedy struck en route.
Sources revealed that the Colonel’s convoy drove into a carefully planned ambush, where insurgents detonated a remotely controlled improvised explosive device (IED) at the exact moment his vehicle approached.
The explosion killed the senior officer instantly, along with several soldiers accompanying him. The exact number of casualties is yet to be officially confirmed.
“He was on his way to rescue his men when the explosion happened. It was a calculated ambush,” a military source said.
The incident underscores growing concerns over the increasing sophistication of Boko Haram attacks, particularly the use of remotely triggered explosives targeting military movements in the region.
Monguno, a strategic military base hosting multiple battalions and high-ranking officers, has remained a critical frontline in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency.
This latest loss adds to a troubling pattern of recent attacks on military formations in Borno. In the past weeks alone, several senior officers have been killed in separate incidents across the state, highlighting escalating risks faced by troops on the battlefield.
Security analysts warn that the continued targeting of commanders could impact operational effectiveness and morale among forces engaged in the long-running conflict.
