Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Governor of Sokoto State and the lawmaker representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing persistent internal crises and leadership disputes within the opposition party.
Tambuwal made the announcement on Thursday through a statement personally signed by him, confirming that he had formally communicated his resignation to his ward chairman in writing.
According to the former governor, the growing internal divisions, leadership disagreements, and prolonged power struggles within the PDP have severely weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party.
“Today, after deep reflection and consultations, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party and have communicated my resignation to my ward chairman,” Tambuwal stated.
The senator explained that his decision came after extensive consultations with political allies, supporters, and other key stakeholders.
Tambuwal, who previously served as Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015, acknowledged the important role the PDP played in his political career.
“The PDP has been a significant part of my political journey, and I remain grateful for the opportunities it gave me to serve our nation, including as Speaker of the House of Representatives and as Governor of Sokoto State,” he said.
However, he stressed that the lingering crisis within the party made it increasingly difficult for him to remain.
“The persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the party have weakened the unity and direction that once defined it,” he added.
Following his resignation, Tambuwal confirmed that he has officially joined the African Democratic Congress alongside many of his political associates and supporters.
He noted that his decision to align with the ADC was driven by his belief that Nigeria needs a stronger and more credible political platform capable of addressing the country’s challenges.
“I am convinced that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development,” Tambuwal stated.
Reaffirming his commitment to public service, the Sokoto South senator said his political journey remains anchored on the ideals of democracy, justice, and national unity.
Tambuwal’s defection is expected to further reshape Nigeria’s political landscape as political parties continue to realign ahead of future electoral contests.
