Oyo State Governor, , has revealed that schoolchildren and teachers abducted from communities in Oriire Local Government Area are believed to be held within the Old Oyo National Park axis, 27 days after their abduction.
The victims were kidnapped during coordinated attacks on schools in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esinle communities on May 15, 2026, sparking widespread concern across Oyo State and beyond.
Providing an update on ongoing rescue efforts, Governor Makinde said intelligence reports indicate that the abductees remain within the vast Old Oyo National Park area, which stretches across parts of 10 local government areas and covers approximately 2,500 square kilometres.
According to the governor, the enormous size and challenging terrain of the forest reserve have complicated rescue operations, requiring careful planning, coordination, and persistence by security agencies.
Makinde assured families that authorities are actively pursuing every credible lead and deploying all lawful measures to secure the safe release of the victims.
“It has been 27 days since our children and teachers were forcefully taken from their schools. For 27 days, families have gone to bed without their loved ones. For 27 days, communities have lived with uncertainty,” the governor said.
He acknowledged the pain and frustration being experienced by parents and relatives, stressing that the victims remain the top priority of the state government and security agencies.
While declining to disclose operational details for security reasons, Makinde maintained that rescue efforts are ongoing and advancing daily.
The governor also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities through the state’s emergency reporting system.
He further warned against spreading rumours or unverified information that could undermine ongoing rescue operations or jeopardise the safety of the victims.
The prolonged captivity of the schoolchildren and teachers has continued to generate public concern, with families and community leaders calling for intensified efforts to secure their release and restore safety in affected communities.
