Nigerians living in Canada under the banner of the Take-It-Back Movement marked Nigeria’s Democracy Day with a protest demanding the immediate rescue of schoolchildren recently abducted in Oyo State and calling for stronger action against insecurity across the country.
The demonstrators expressed concern over the rising cases of kidnapping and violence affecting communities in Nigeria, accusing the government of not doing enough to protect citizens.
During the protest, one of the organisers questioned how quickly authorities would respond if the victims were relatives of top government officials, using the abduction of the Oyo schoolchildren as an example.
The protesters argued that every Nigerian life deserves equal attention and protection, regardless of social status or political connections.
Several speakers also criticised the country’s worsening security challenges, economic hardship, and what they described as a lack of accountability among political leaders.
Some protesters called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take more decisive action to address insecurity, while others demanded broader political reforms and greater opportunities for young Nigerians to participate in governance.
The demonstration highlighted growing concerns among members of the Nigerian diaspora over the continued wave of kidnappings, attacks, and humanitarian challenges facing communities across the country.
Participants urged security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of the abducted children and prevent future incidents, stressing that the safety of citizens should remain a top national priority.
The protest comes amid increasing calls from civil society groups and concerned Nigerians for stronger measures to tackle insecurity and protect vulnerable communities nationwide.
