The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has launched a scathing attack on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing the government of being disconnected from the harsh economic realities facing millions of Nigerians.
The opposition party’s criticism follows comments by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who recently dismissed widespread claims of hunger across the country, insisting that many Nigerians are benefiting from the administration’s policies and infrastructure projects.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Onanuga defended the government’s economic reforms, citing road construction projects, student loan programmes, and credit facilities as evidence of progress under the Tinubu administration.
He recalled a recent trip from Ibadan to Lagos, where he discovered a newly constructed concrete road along the Ijebu-Ode route and suggested that such developments had improved the lives of residents.
However, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi rejected the remarks, describing them as insensitive and out of touch with the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
“Mr. Onanuga’s comments reveal how disconnected this government has become from the realities facing millions of citizens,” Abdullahi said in a statement released on Wednesday.
According to the ADC spokesman, Nigerians are not exaggerating their hardship, stressing that soaring food prices, rising transportation costs, inflation, and declining purchasing power have pushed many families into severe economic distress.
“The truth is that Nigerians are not faking their suffering,” Abdullahi stated. “The current cost-of-living crisis is the direct consequence of poorly implemented economic policies that have left millions worse off than they were before.”
The opposition party further accused the government of measuring its success through infrastructure projects while ignoring the immediate economic challenges confronting citizens.
“Nigerians cannot eat roads,” Abdullahi declared. “The primary responsibility of government is to create conditions where people can afford food, secure jobs, run businesses successfully, and live with dignity.”
He argued that despite government claims of progress, many Nigerians continue to struggle with basic necessities and urged the administration to acknowledge the impact of its policies on ordinary citizens.
The ADC maintained that the key issue is no longer whether Nigerians are suffering, but whether the government is prepared to accept responsibility and take meaningful action to address the country’s worsening economic conditions.
