A South African court has sentenced four police officers and a police informant to 15 years imprisonment each for their involvement in the kidnapping and robbery of a Nigerian national and two Congolese nationals.
The convicted officers — Tebogo Michael Moeketse, Choema Eric Moabelo, Isram Moaone Phala, and Kagiso Arthur Masibi — alongside police informant Walter Enow Agbor, were found guilty by the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on multiple charges, including robbery, corruption, kidnapping, theft, and defeating the ends of justice.
According to prosecutors, the group carried out an illegal operation in Randburg on May 8, 2018, during which approximately R1.2 million was unlawfully taken from the victims. Investigations later revealed that no legitimate arrests had been made, no criminal case had been registered, and the seized money could not be properly accounted for.
The case was investigated by South Africa’s Serious Corruption Investigation Unit, which uncovered evidence linking the suspects to the crime. Some of the accused were reportedly found with cash connected to the robbery, while others were arrested while allegedly attempting to fabricate documents to conceal their actions.
Although each defendant received a combined sentence of 38 years for the various offences, the court ordered the sentences to run concurrently, resulting in an effective 15-year jail term for each convict.
During sentencing, Senior Public Prosecutor Yusuf Baba argued that the officers had abused the authority entrusted to them by the public, describing their actions as a serious betrayal of public trust and a direct attack on the integrity of law enforcement institutions.
The court agreed with the prosecution’s submissions, stressing the need for accountability within the police service.
In a related development, South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority secured a confiscation order that led to the forfeiture of R282,500 recovered during the investigation. The funds will be transferred to the Criminal Assets Recovery Account.
Authorities described the convictions as a significant victory in the fight against corruption and criminal misconduct within law enforcement agencies.
