Residents of Ugep in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State have raised fresh concerns over the worsening land dispute with the neighbouring Idomi community, following reports of renewed violence, destruction of property and growing fear among residents.
Sources within the affected communities said the long-standing boundary conflict has intensified in recent days, with violent confrontations reportedly occurring almost daily.
Community members have criticised the Cross River State Government over what they described as an inadequate response to the crisis. According to residents, the prolonged dispute has been aggravated by the government’s inability to take decisive action to restore peace and address the underlying issues surrounding the ownership of the disputed land.
Some residents also alleged that the absence of swift intervention from the state leadership has contributed to the worsening security situation in the area.
In addition, concerns have been raised over efforts by Deputy Governor Peter Odey to resolve the dispute. Community sources claimed that previous interventions failed to produce a lasting solution and, in some cases, further heightened tensions between both communities.
Sources disclosed that leaders of the Ugep community are considering legal action against the state government over the recent demarcation of the disputed territory, which they claim favours the Idomi community. They alleged that the decision was reached without adequate consultation with all affected stakeholders.
As tensions continue to rise, residents are calling on the Cross River State Government to establish an independent Judicial Panel of Inquiry to investigate the historical ownership of the disputed land and the circumstances surrounding the recurring clashes.
According to community representatives, such a panel would help establish the facts, identify those responsible for acts of violence and recommend measures capable of ensuring lasting peace between both communities.
Residents have also appealed to the state and federal governments, as well as security agencies, to urgently intervene and prevent further loss of lives and destruction of property.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the latest allegations and demands raised by members of the affected communities.
