The Elegant Nurses Forum (ENF) has called for an immediate investigation into allegations of quackery, illegal medical practice, unlawful training of unqualified healthcare workers and sexual exploitation involving Mr. Williams Olugbenro, owner of Omi-Iye Trado-Bone and Community Health Services Clinic in Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its National Coordinator, Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide, the forum urged the Ogun State Government, security agencies and relevant regulatory bodies to conduct what it described as a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations.
According to the group, Olugbenro, popularly known as “Dr. Williams,” has allegedly been treating patients with various medical conditions, including obstetric and gynaecological cases, despite questions surrounding his qualifications and professional certification.
The ENF further alleged that several young people had been recruited and trained as healthcare workers without undergoing recognised professional education or obtaining the necessary licences required to practise nursing and other medical professions.
“Even more disturbing are reports that several young persons have been recruited and trained as healthcare workers without recognised professional education or registration,” the statement read.
“These individuals were allegedly made to appear as nurses despite lacking the education, clinical training and professional licence required to practise nursing. Some of these individuals have also made allegations of sexual exploitation, sexual harassment and threats against Mr. Williams Olugbenro.”
The nursing body advised affected individuals to discontinue any unauthorised training programmes and instead seek admission into accredited institutions approved to train healthcare professionals.
According to the forum, illegal medical practice poses a serious threat to public health, exposing patients to wrong diagnoses, delayed treatment, dangerous complications and preventable deaths.
“The solution to unemployment or the desire to join the healthcare profession cannot be illegal training that places innocent lives at risk,” Olamide stated.
The group noted that quackery undermines public confidence in qualified healthcare workers and licensed medical facilities, stressing that healthcare practice requires proper education, clinical competence and strict regulatory oversight.
The ENF called on the Ogun State Commissioner for Health and the state’s Anti-Quackery Committee to investigate the activities of Olugbenro and determine whether his clinic is duly registered and licensed to provide healthcare services.
It also urged authorities to verify his professional status, examine the legality of the services offered at the clinic and investigate allegations of illegal training and the unlawful presentation of unqualified persons as nurses.
In addition, the forum appealed to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police to launch a comprehensive probe into allegations of unlawful medical practice, sexual exploitation, sexual harassment and criminal intimidation.
The group further urged professional regulatory agencies to collaborate in identifying and prosecuting anyone found to be practising medicine illegally or falsely presenting themselves as healthcare professionals.
“The Elegant Nurses Forum wishes to make it clear that these allegations require a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation by the competent authorities,” Olamide said.
“Every person is entitled to a fair investigation and due process under the law. However, allegations involving public safety, illegal medical practice and the exploitation of vulnerable persons must never be ignored.”
The forum reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of the nursing profession and supporting efforts aimed at eliminating quackery within Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Authorities are yet to issue an official response to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
