Concerns are mounting over the welfare of 36 Nigerian military personnel detained over an alleged coup plot, with reports claiming that one of the officers has suffered severe health complications, including partial blindness, following alleged torture in custody.
A security source told reporters that Lieutenant Commander Abdullahi is in critical condition and may be losing his sight due to prolonged maltreatment while in detention.
“One of the officers is going blind due to alleged torture. Lieutenant Commander Abdullahi is almost blind,” the source claimed.
The source further alleged that several of the detained personnel are facing deteriorating health conditions, including skin rashes and worsening physical conditions attributed to poor detention environments.
“Most of them have rashes on their bodies. Their living conditions are getting terrible,” the source added.
The 36 officers were reportedly arrested over allegations of involvement in a coup plot against the government. They are currently being held in military custody as investigations continue.
Reports also suggest concerns over their legal rights, with claims that visitation has been restricted and access to legal counsel limited in some cases.
“There are fears that those yet to meet their lawyers are vulnerable. Families are also worried about how the process is being handled,” the source said.
Authorities have not officially confirmed the torture allegations, and no public response has been issued regarding the reported health condition of the detained officers.
The situation continues to raise questions about due process, detention conditions, and the handling of high-profile military investigations.
