Gunmen suspected to be bandits have attacked a Benue State Government–owned commercial bus, leaving three passengers with gunshot injuries in a renewed assault on travellers along the Gboko–Otukpo axis.
The incident occurred on Saturday night as the Benue Links bus was en route from Gboko to Otukpo, where it was expected to lodge overnight before continuing its journey to Lagos. The attackers reportedly intercepted the vehicle a few kilometres outside Otukpo town and opened fire on the passengers.
Confirming the attack on Sunday, the Information Officer of Benue Links Nigeria Limited, Johnson Ehi Daniel, said the incident happened at about 7:00pm on January 10, 2026, at the Burnt Bricks area of Otukpo.
“The management of Benue Links Nigeria Limited regrets to confirm an attack on one of its vehicles with registration number PP974,” Daniel said. “Three passengers sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo. Fortunately, no life was lost.”
He added that the injured passengers are responding positively to treatment and that the General Manager of the company, Mr. Alexander Aondohemba Fanafa, alongside the Business Manager, Edache Joseph, visited them at the hospital.
According to Daniel, the company has committed to covering the full medical expenses of the victims and providing them with both logistical and emotional support.
After the hospital visit, the General Manager reportedly proceeded to the Otukpo Police Station, where he met with the Divisional Police Officer and other officers, commending their prompt response to distress calls and urging sustained efforts to curb criminal activities along the route.
Mr. Fanafa also addressed Benue Links drivers at the Otukpo Motor Park, reiterating the company’s strict ban on night journeys. He warned that any driver found violating the directive would face disciplinary action.
The latest attack has renewed public concern over the safety of road users in Benue State, especially amid repeated attacks on commercial vehicles, raising fresh calls for improved security on major highways.
