The Ogun State Police Command has ordered an internal investigation following the circulation of a viral video showing controversial musician Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, handcuffed in police custody, amid allegations of assault.
Reports indicate that the singer’s arrest was triggered by a complaint lodged by his baby mama, Asabi, although details of the complaint have not been officially disclosed.
The footage, widely shared on social media—particularly on X (formerly Twitter)—shows Portable inside a detention facility in Ogun State. The video has since sparked public outrage, with many Nigerians raising concerns about police conduct, brutality, and the rights of suspects.
Reacting to the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the artiste is currently in police custody. However, he condemned the manner in which the suspect was handled in the video, describing it as unacceptable and against established police procedures.
“The Ogun State Police Command has ordered an investigation into a viral video showing Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, allegedly being assaulted while in police custody,” Babaseyi said in a post on X on Sunday.
He stressed that the police do not permit the filming or public display of suspects, noting that such actions endanger suspects and undermine the integrity of investigations.
“We don’t condone videoing suspects. We don’t even put suspects’ faces out. No matter who the suspect is, nobody should be treated in such a manner,” the police spokesman stated.
DSP Babaseyi added that an internal probe has already commenced, assuring the public that any officers found culpable would be sanctioned in accordance with the law.
“The investigation is ongoing, and the officers involved, if found culpable, will be sent to the appropriate authorities. That process has already started,” he said.
The incident has once again reignited national debate over police accountability and respect for human rights, especially in cases involving high-profile individuals.
