The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has claimed that more than 250,000 non-citizens are illegally registered to vote across four U.S. states, as the Trump administration intensifies efforts to strengthen election security.
The claim was contained in a DHS document titled “Preventing Alien Voting,” which outlined preliminary findings from reviews of voter registration records.
According to the department, the states identified are California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Nevada. DHS said election officials in the affected states have been notified and that investigations will be expanded to additional states.
The department stated that the findings were based on reviews of public voter registration files from states that had not fully utilised the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) programme.
DHS also disclosed that 25 states have processed more than 68 million voter registration records through the enhanced SAVE system. According to the department, the review identified more than 400,000 deceased individuals still listed on voter rolls and over 28,000 suspected non-citizens allegedly registered to vote in participating states.
The report said the Department of Homeland Security is working with state election officials and the U.S. Department of Justice to review voter registration records in line with federal election laws.
The agency further criticised a recent court ruling that temporarily suspended parts of the enhanced SAVE verification programme, arguing that the decision could make it more difficult for states to identify ineligible voter registrations.
The report also linked the alleged increase in non-citizen registrations to immigration policies under former President Joe Biden’s administration.
The latest claims come as President Donald Trump continues to advocate stricter election laws, including legislation that would require proof of U.S. citizenship and government-issued photo identification before individuals can vote in federal elections.
As of the time of this report, the DHS findings remain part of an ongoing federal review, and election officials are expected to continue examining the voter registration records.
