The Oyo State Police Command has arrested seven suspects in connection with the killing of a 20-year-old man, Seidu Amisu, following a violent dispute linked to cattle rearing in Atisbo Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which was reported at the Ago-Are Police Division, occurred at the Budo Fatti area of Ofiki Village, where an argument over cattle management reportedly escalated into a fatal confrontation.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had an altercation with Umaru Saidu (40) and Umaru Gambo (37) over cattle-related issues.
According to the police, the disagreement degenerated into a physical struggle during which Umaru Gambo allegedly struck Seidu Amisu with a stick, leading to his death.
The police further disclosed that after realising the victim had died, the suspects allegedly attempted to cover up the crime by secretly burying his body with the help of other accomplices.
Those accused of assisting in concealing the crime were identified as Umar Abubakar, Usman Seidu, Muhammed Aliu and Musa Abubakar, bringing the total number of suspects arrested to seven.
DSP Olayinka said the arrests followed an intelligence-led investigation launched by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Ago-Are Division. All suspects are currently in custody and have reportedly made confessional statements.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Femi Haruna, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Homicide Section, for further and more detailed investigation.
CP Haruna reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on violent crime, warning that all those found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
“The Oyo State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and will ensure that perpetrators of violent crimes are decisively brought to justice,” he said.
The police also urged residents of Atisbo Local Government Area and the wider Oyo State to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely and credible information to help prevent crime.
