Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that his party will keep a close watch on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, warning that the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy largely depends on the conduct of the electoral body.
Kwankwaso made the remarks on Saturday in Abuja while addressing delegates at the NNPP national convention, moments after newly re-elected party executives were sworn into office.
The convention, which drew party leaders and delegates from across the country, was also attended by representatives of INEC, underscoring the significance of the gathering as the NNPP consolidates its structure ahead of the next election cycle.
Speaking at the event, the NNPP national leader congratulated INEC on the appointment of its new National Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, stressing that public trust in elections is inseparable from the integrity and independence of the electoral umpire.
“I want to appreciate the INEC representatives present here today and, through you, congratulate the newly appointed National Chairman of the commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan,” Kwankwaso said. “The confidence Nigerians have in our elections depends greatly on how INEC conducts its duties.”
He, however, made it clear that the NNPP would remain vigilant as the commission begins preparations for the 2027 polls.
“So far, so good, but we are keeping our eyes on INEC because its responsibility is so critical that it can either make or mar democracy in this country,” he stated. “We look forward to an even better working relationship between INEC and our party.”
Kwankwaso also reassured party members of the commitment of the NNPP leadership to expanding the party’s influence nationwide, describing unity and organisation as key to future electoral success.
“I want to assure you that the leadership of NNPP at all levels will continue to do everything necessary to ensure that this party grows from strength to strength,” he said, while also commending the Kano State Governor for his continued support of the party.
The convention ratified key decisions of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and formally elected members of the National Working Committee (NWC), as the NNPP intensifies preparations for the 2027 general election following its breakout performance in the 2023 polls.
With renewed leadership in place, the party says it is positioning itself as a major force in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
