Ilorin, Kwara State — Tension erupted at the Kwara State Government House on Monday as women protesting rising insecurity and repeated abductions in parts of the state were allegedly attacked and flogged by suspected thugs, despite the presence of police officers at the scene.
The women, drawn from different communities across Kwara State, had converged peacefully to demand urgent government action over worsening security challenges, including kidnappings and violent attacks that have left residents living in fear. Protesters carried placards and chanted solidarity songs, calling on authorities to protect lives and property.
However, eyewitnesses told SUNTV Global Channel that the peaceful protest turned chaotic when a group of suspected thugs reportedly descended on the women, physically assaulting and flogging several of them near the Government House entrance. Videos circulating on social media show distressed women running for safety as tensions escalated.
Sources at the scene alleged that police officers present did not immediately intervene to stop the attack, raising serious concerns over security lapses and the protection of citizens’ right to peaceful assembly.
As of press time, there has been no official statement from the Kwara State Government or the Police Command regarding the incident. Human rights advocates and concerned Nigerians have since taken to social media to condemn the alleged attack, calling for a thorough investigation and the prosecution of those responsible.
