The United States government has imposed sanctions on seven Iraqi militia commanders accused of coordinating attacks against American personnel, facilities, and interests in Iraq.
The action was announced by the U.S. Department of the Treasury through its Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), targeting individuals linked to Iran-backed armed groups operating within Iraq.
According to the Treasury, those sanctioned are key figures in militant organisations including Kata’ib Hizballah, Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada, Harakat al-Nujaba, and Asa’ib Ahl al-Haqq. The groups have been accused of carrying out repeated attacks on U.S. forces and undermining Iraq’s stability.
U.S. Treasury Secretary, , stated that Washington would not tolerate threats to its citizens and interests.
“We will not allow Iraq’s terrorist militias, backed by Iran, to threaten American lives or interests,” he said, adding that individuals supporting such activities would be held accountable.
The sanctions were issued under Executive Order 13224, which targets individuals and entities involved in terrorism. Under the measures, all assets belonging to the designated individuals within the United States, or under the control of U.S. persons, have been frozen. U.S. authorities also warned that financial institutions and foreign entities dealing with the sanctioned individuals risk facing penalties.
Among those named is Ammar Jasim Kadhim Al Rammahi, identified as an operational commander of Kata’ib Hizballah, allegedly responsible for planning and coordinating attacks against U.S. targets. Others listed include senior operatives linked to various militia groups accused of supporting violent operations.
The Treasury further alleged that some of the groups have received funding, training, and weapons from Iran, including the use of drones in recent attacks.
Officials noted that the sanctions are part of broader efforts to curb the activities of Iran-backed militias in the region. They added that the objective is not only to punish those involved but also to deter future attacks and promote stability.
The U.S. government reiterated that it remains committed to protecting its personnel and maintaining security in Iraq, warning that further actions could be taken if such threats persist.
