The Republic of Türkiye has strongly condemned the deadly terrorist attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives and pledging continued support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.
In a statement released on Thursday by Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Turkish government described the attack as “heinous” and said it was deeply saddened by reports of mass casualties.
“We strongly condemn this heinous attack and extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and to the people of Nigeria. Türkiye will continue to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism,” the statement said.
The condemnation follows revelations by Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) that the attack was carried out by terrorists angered by the refusal of residents to submit to ideological indoctrination.
According to the DHQ, the assailants had earlier visited Woro community requesting permission to conduct preaching and indoctrination sessions—an offer the villagers reportedly rejected outright. Troops were subsequently deployed to the area and maintained patrols and surveillance for about two weeks before withdrawing.
However, the military said the terrorists returned weeks later in retaliation, launching a brutal assault that left more than 170 residents dead, according to reports.
Describing the incident as a “cowardly terrorist attack,” the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) were shocked by the scale of the violence and mourned with the affected families and communities.
The military commended the residents of Woro and neighbouring communities for their resilience and refusal to abandon their way of life or constitutional loyalty despite threats and intimidation.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria mourn with the families of those who lost loved ones in these and other similar attacks on defenceless citizens who are defending community values and freedom across Nigeria,” the statement said.
The DHQ also called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in their commitment to the Constitution and to resist violent extremist ideologies, warning that such groups seek to impose twisted beliefs through fear, terror, and intimidation.
Citizens were urged to strengthen cooperation with security agencies, as unity and resilience were described as Nigeria’s strongest weapons against terrorism.
Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the military said it is intensifying efforts—alongside other security agencies—to track down and prosecute those responsible for the attack in Kwara State and other acts of terrorism nationwide.
Meanwhile, Amnesty International has condemned what it described as an alarming escalation of killings and abductions across Nigeria, accusing authorities of failing to protect lives and property.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the global human rights organisation described Tuesday, February 3, 2026, as a “Bloody Tuesday,” citing coordinated attacks in Kwara, Katsina, and Benue states that left dozens dead.
“Alarming escalation of attacks, abductions for ransom and frequent killings across Nigeria have left people feeling more unsafe, showing the utter failure of the Nigerian authorities to protect lives and properties,” Amnesty International said.
