The Nigerian Army has confirmed a deadly ambush by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State, resulting in the death of a senior officer, Colonel I.A. Mohammed, and six other soldiers.
The attack, which occurred late on April 12, targeted troops under Sector 3 of Operation HADIN KAI in Monguno. According to an official statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, spokesperson for the Joint Task Force (North East), the troops came under a coordinated assault at a military location identified as “Charlie 13.”
Military sources had earlier revealed that the terrorists deployed armed drones during the ambush — a development that signals a dangerous evolution in the tactics of insurgent groups operating in the region.
Despite the surprise attack, troops reportedly engaged the insurgents in a fierce gun battle, eventually repelling them and maintaining control of the area.
However, tragedy struck shortly after the confrontation. The Army disclosed that Colonel Mohammed, while moving to assess the situation on the ground, encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), which detonated and destroyed his vehicle.
The explosion claimed the lives of the commanding officer and six other personnel.
The military described the fallen colonel as a courageous and selfless leader who died in active service while demonstrating exceptional bravery.
“His actions reflected the highest traditions of military leadership — courage, sacrifice, and leading from the front,” the statement noted.
The Army expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing that the sacrifices of the slain soldiers would not be forgotten.
“Operation HADIN KAI mourns the loss of these gallant personnel who paid the ultimate price in defense of the nation. Their sacrifice will remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and a grateful nation,” the statement added.
The incident underscores the persistent threat posed by insurgents in Nigeria’s North-East, even as military operations continue to intensify in the region.
