International tensions have escalated as Masoud Pezeshkian, President of Iran, strongly condemned what he described as insults against Pope Leo XIV and the “desecration” of Jesus Christ, amid an ongoing war of words involving Donald Trump.
In a direct message to the Catholic leader, Pezeshkian expressed solidarity with the Pope and denounced any disrespect toward religious figures, stating that such actions are unacceptable globally.
“His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, I condemn the insult to Your Excellency on behalf of the great nation of Iran, and declare that the desecration of Jesus… is not acceptable to any free person,” he said.
The Iranian leader’s statement follows recent criticisms from Trump directed at the Pope, which have sparked international reactions and heightened religious and political sensitivities.
Despite the controversy, Pope Leo XIV has maintained a calm and diplomatic stance, refusing to engage in political confrontation. Speaking to journalists during a flight to Algeria, the pontiff made it clear that his mission remains focused on faith and peace.
“I am not a politician. I have no intention of entering into a debate,” the Pope said.

“I do not think the message of the Gospel should be abused in the way some people are doing,” he cautioned.
