The United States military has confirmed that a fourth American service member has died from injuries sustained during Iran’s retaliatory attacks, marking a further escalation in the ongoing war between Washington and Tehran.
In an operational update released Monday morning, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) disclosed that the latest casualty had previously been listed among seriously wounded personnel.
“As of 7:30 a.m. ET, March 2, four U.S. service members have been killed in action. The fourth service member, who was seriously wounded during Iran’s initial attacks, eventually succumbed to their injuries,” the command said in a statement shared on social media.
Military authorities noted that the identities of the fallen troops will remain undisclosed until at least 24 hours after their families have been officially notified.
The new fatality increases the death toll from Sunday’s earlier report, when the United States confirmed three troop deaths during operations tied to large-scale airstrikes on Iranian targets under what officials called Operation Epic Fury.
CENTCOM had also reported that five additional American personnel suffered serious injuries, while several others sustained minor wounds, including shrapnel injuries and concussions, during retaliatory strikes carried out by Iranian forces across the region.
The mounting casualties highlight the growing human cost of a conflict that erupted after the United States, alongside Israel, launched coordinated attacks on military and strategic infrastructure inside Iran.
The crisis has rapidly escalated into one of the most volatile confrontations in recent Middle Eastern history, following reports that senior Iranian leadership figures — including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — were killed during the initial wave of air assaults.
The alleged deaths triggered widespread retaliation by Iranian forces and heightened fears of a broader regional war.
U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to continue the military campaign despite rising casualties, describing the operation as a necessary mission to eliminate what he called an existential threat.
“As one nation, we grieve for the true American patriots who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, even as we continue the righteous mission for which they gave their lives,” Trump said in a video statement posted on his Truth Social platform.
He added that more casualties could occur before the conflict ends.
The U.S. administration maintains that its actions are aimed at countering what it describes as Iran’s growing nuclear and missile threats. However, no publicly released evidence has been presented showing Tehran was close to producing a nuclear weapon, while Iranian authorities continue to deny pursuing such capabilities.
