Fresh security concerns have emerged in Kwara State following a deadly attack by suspected terrorists on Alabe community in Ifelodun Local Government Area, resulting in the death of a local hunter.
The victim, identified as Habeeb Adeniyi, popularly known as “Adeyi,” was reportedly killed when armed men invaded the community from nearby forest areas on Saturday.
Alabe is the hometown of Rafiu Ajakaye, the immediate past Chief Press Secretary to Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
According to local sources, the attack occurred after hunters in the area received intelligence that suspected bandits were moving towards the community from the Budo-Are Forest axis.
The hunters reportedly mobilised to track the movement of the armed men but were unable to locate them before returning home.
Sources said Adeyi later went to his farm without his hunting rifle and was unexpectedly confronted by the attackers.
“He was caught unaware. The bandits encountered him on the farm and shot him dead,” a source familiar with the incident disclosed.
Another hunter who was reportedly with him managed to escape unharmed.
The deceased was buried on Sunday according to Islamic rites.
In a related development, suspected bandits reportedly launched another attack on Abayan community in the same local government area on Saturday night.
However, residents and local vigilante groups were said to have successfully repelled the attackers, preventing any abductions or casualties.
The latest incidents have heightened fears among residents of Kwara South, particularly in Ifelodun, Isin, Irepodun, and Ekiti Local Government Areas, where communities have repeatedly raised alarm over the growing activities of armed groups operating from surrounding forests.
Security experts have warned that criminal elements are increasingly exploiting forest corridors that connect several states, making rural communities more vulnerable to attacks.
Residents are now calling for increased security presence and coordinated operations to prevent further incursions and protect lives and property in affected communities.
The attack adds to growing concerns over insecurity across parts of North-Central Nigeria, where cases of banditry, kidnapping, and violent attacks continue to threaten local populations.
