Fresh tension has gripped communities in Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State following a chilling ultimatum reportedly issued by suspected bandits, demanding the delivery of 700 cattle and 1,000 sheep within six days or face coordinated attacks.
The threat has sparked widespread panic across rural settlements, with residents fleeing their homes amid fears of imminent violence.
According to local sources, the demand was allegedly communicated through a letter circulated on Thursday, heightening anxiety in affected communities already battling persistent insecurity. Villages including Sukuntuni, Unguwar Tsamiya, Magama, Walawa, and Tudun Wulli have reportedly been thrown into chaos as armed groups continue to move freely along bush paths on motorcycles.
A resident who spoke to SUNTV Global Channel under anonymity revealed that the ultimatum follows months of harassment, kidnappings, and cattle rustling in the area.
The source further disclosed that a bandit leader identified as Muhammadu allegedly mobilised over 200 motorcycles to transport about 1,700 stolen livestock to Rimaye town after a reported internal dispute within his group. Days later, he reportedly issued the same demand to surrounding communities, describing it as a compulsory “tax.”
“He sent a message that we must provide the same number of animals within six days or face a full-scale attack. People are terrified,” the resident said.
The situation has triggered a wave of displacement, with families abandoning their homes in search of safety. Many have reportedly relocated to nearby areas including Rimaye, parts of Kano State, and Katsina town. Local estimates suggest that no fewer than 10 villages have already been deserted.
Residents also recalled previous violent attacks in the region, including an incident in Sayaya where a hospital was set ablaze, security personnel and civilians were killed, and several vehicles destroyed—further deepening fears of renewed bloodshed.
Reacting to the development, the Director-General of Media to the Katsina State Governor, Maiwada Dammalla, stated that authorities are yet to officially confirm the authenticity of the alleged letter.
“The letter has not been verified by any authority. It may have been intended to create panic. However, the government is working tirelessly with security agencies to ensure the protection of lives and property,” he said.
Security operatives have since intensified surveillance across Kankia LGA and surrounding communities as investigations continue.
Despite these assurances, fear remains high among residents who say the threat feels real and immediate, as northern Katsina continues to grapple with recurring banditry, kidnappings, and livestock theft.
