A dispatch rider has been confirmed dead after he was crushed by an empty fuel tanker in the Alapere area of Lagos State, in a tragic road accident that sparked mob action.

The incident occurred along the Motorways inward Estate axis when the tanker, reportedly speeding, lost control and rammed into the moving rider, killing him instantly.

According to preliminary reports, the impact of the collision caused immediate outrage among nearby dispatch riders, who mobilised and attacked the tanker driver in anger.

However, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) quickly arrived at the scene and intervened, preventing the situation from escalating further.

LASTMA officials successfully rescued the injured tanker driver from the mob and handed him over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service for urgent medical attention at a nearby hospital.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that police operatives were later deployed to the area to restore order and disperse the crowd.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as tragic and avoidable, extending condolences to the family of the deceased rider.

He also warned motorists, especially tanker drivers, against reckless and overspeeding on Lagos roads, stressing that such behaviour continues to cause avoidable deaths.

Authorities confirmed that both the tanker and the damaged motorcycle have been handed over to the police for further investigation.
