South Korean special prosecutors have formally asked the court to sentence former President Yoon Suk Yeol to 10 years in prison, marking a dramatic escalation in the legal battle stemming from his failed attempt to impose martial law earlier this year.
According to reports by Yonhap News Agency, prosecutors accused Yoon of obstructing justice by actively attempting to block his arrest in January. They allege that the former president barricaded himself inside the presidential compound and ordered security personnel to take measures aimed at preventing investigators from executing a lawful arrest warrant.
The sentencing request, reported by Reuters, is the first prison term demand made by special prosecutors against the ousted leader. Yoon is facing multiple charges linked to the controversial martial law episode, which plunged the country into political turmoil and sparked widespread public protests.
Yoon was removed from office earlier this year following intense political and legal pressure, as critics accused him of abusing executive power and undermining democratic institutions. The failed martial law declaration drew sharp condemnation from opposition parties, civil society groups, and international observers.
Despite the accusations, Yoon has denied any wrongdoing, insisting that his actions were lawful and taken in what he described as the national interest at the time.
