Residents of Jabo town in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State were thrown into panic on Christmas night following loud explosions believed to have resulted from aerial bombardments linked to United States military operations in Northwest Nigeria.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the incident occurred suddenly on Thursday night when an object suspected to be an explosive device fell into the community, triggering a powerful blast that sent residents fleeing in fear.
Although no casualties were recorded, parts of the debris reportedly landed close to a gathering of people, heightening tension and confusion across the town. Many residents said they spent the night awake, gripped by fear after hearing the explosion and witnessing objects fall from the sky.
Images obtained by SUNTV Global Channel show fragments of metallic objects scattered on the ground, believed to be remnants from the aerial bombardment.
Eyewitnesses described the moment as terrifying, noting that the blast came without warning. “We heard a very loud sound, and suddenly things started falling. Everyone ran for safety,” one resident said.
The incident comes days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that American forces had launched airstrikes against ISIS-linked terrorist groups operating in Northwest Nigeria.
A government source disclosed that the U.S.-led operation was carried out in close coordination with Nigeria’s Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), headed by Nuhu Ribadu. According to the source, intelligence units within the NSA worked alongside the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) to identify and target suspected ISIS elements for what was described as their “elimination.”
However, details regarding the number of targets hit and the overall scale of the operation remain unclear.
SUNTV Global Channel also confirmed reports of another explosion on the outskirts of Jibo village, also in Tambuwal Local Government Area, further fuelling anxiety among residents of surrounding communities.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Sokoto State Government nor security agencies have issued an official statement on the explosions.
