Tragedy struck along the busy Lekki–Epe corridor in Lagos after a fatal road crash involving an articulated truck and a commercial minibus left four passengers dead and four others seriously injured.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to the agency, the accident occurred opposite Beechwood, Shapati, inward Ajah, along the Lekki–Epe Expressway over the weekend.
Officials said the crash involved a HOWO articulated truck with registration number KNN 313 YL and a Suzuki commercial minibus, popularly known as “Korope.”
Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck driver lost control of the heavy-duty vehicle while in motion, causing it to veer across the carriageway and slam violently into the oncoming passenger bus.
The force of the collision resulted in the instant death of four male passengers, while four others—two men and two women—sustained severe injuries after becoming trapped inside the mangled remains of the minibus.
LASTMA officials, working alongside emergency responders and good Samaritans, quickly arrived at the scene and carried out rescue operations.
According to the agency, the trapped victims were carefully extricated from the wreckage and rushed to Hamon Royal Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were evacuated to the Shency Hospital morgue by an ambulance belonging to the Federal Road Safety Corps.
Police officers from the Elemoro Division of the Nigeria Police Force were also present to secure the accident scene and maintain order during the rescue efforts.
Authorities disclosed that the truck driver and his motorboy fled the scene shortly after the crash, while police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fatal accident.
Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
He also wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery and commended the swift and coordinated response of emergency agencies involved in the rescue operation.
Bakare-Oki further urged motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, to strictly obey traffic regulations and adopt responsible driving habits to prevent avoidable road accidents.
