Tension gripped Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Tuesday after a violent clash between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Accord Party reportedly left one person dead and several others injured.
Residents were thrown into panic as gunshots echoed across major parts of the city, including Owode, Aisu, Olaiya, and Oke-Fia, forcing many people to flee for safety.
The Osun State chapter of the Accord Party has accused armed political thugs allegedly linked to APC governorship aspirant, Bola Oyebamiji, of carrying out coordinated attacks on residents and motorists.
In a statement signed by the party’s chairman, Pastor Victor Babalola Akande, the Accord Party alleged that more than 20 armed men moved through Osogbo in a convoy of branded buses, shooting indiscriminately and creating fear among residents.
According to the party, the violence reportedly began in Akoda and spread through several communities before reaching Owode-Ede, where a trader was allegedly struck by a stray bullet and died on the spot.
The Accord Party further claimed that several individuals sustained serious gunshot injuries and are currently receiving treatment in hospitals, while many others suffered varying degrees of injuries during the unrest.
Akande described the incident as a dangerous escalation of political violence and warned that such actions pose a serious threat to democracy, peace, and public safety in Osun State.
“We strongly condemn this attack and call for an immediate investigation to ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice,” he stated.
The party also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies to intervene urgently and prevent further breakdown of law and order ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election.
As of the time of filing this report, the Osun State Police Command had not officially commented on the allegations, as efforts to reach police authorities were unsuccessful.
The incident comes amid rising political tensions in Osun State as parties intensify preparations for the 2026 governorship election.
Political observers have expressed concern over the increasing level of hostility among supporters, warning that failure to address political violence could threaten peace and democratic stability in the state.
Security agencies are expected to launch investigations into the incident as residents call for calm and greater protection of lives and property.
