Fresh revelations have emerged in the controversial killing of 28-year-old Delta youth, Oghenemine Ogidi, popularly known as “Mene Ogidi,” as police authorities reportedly arrested two suspects linked to the firearm that led to his fatal shooting in Effurun, Delta State.
Sources familiar with the investigation disclosed that one of the suspects allegedly arranged and transported a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, to Effurun through a commercial transport service.
The suspects were reportedly transferred to the Effurun Area Command of the Delta State Police Command on Wednesday night as investigations into the incident intensified.
According to sources, Ogidi had allegedly gone to pick up the parcel on behalf of a friend before he was intercepted and reportedly shot dead by police officer ASP Nuhu Usman in the presence of other operatives.
“It’s confirmed. Two suspects were brought in Wednesday night,” a source close to the investigation revealed.
“One of them is believed to be the individual who sent the gun from Yenagoa to Effurun through a transport line, while the identity and role of the second suspect are still being investigated.”
Investigators are reportedly trying to determine whether the second suspect may have been involved in transporting the parcel from Bayelsa State.
The killing of Ogidi has sparked outrage across Delta State and renewed concerns over alleged police brutality and extrajudicial killings in Nigeria.
The Nigeria Police Force had earlier announced the dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers allegedly involved in the shooting following an internal investigation.
Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, stated that the dismissed officers would be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution.
However, the development has done little to calm public anger, especially after emotional testimonies from Ogidi’s grieving family.
Speaking during an interview with BBC News Pidgin, Ogidi’s mother tearfully revealed that another of her sons had previously been killed by police officers.
“The one they killed before is younger than this one,” she cried.
“What did I do to the police? My son was begging them in the video that he only went to help someone collect a waybill.”
Ogidi’s elder sister described him as the backbone of the family, saying his death had devastated them emotionally and financially.
She explained that Ogidi informed the family before leaving home that he was travelling to collect a waybill for a friend in Sapele.
According to her, he borrowed their mother’s phone because his own device was faulty and used it to contact the owner of the parcel, who reportedly sent him transport fare.
When he failed to return home, the family began searching across several police stations, including Ekpan, Ebrumede, and other divisions, but authorities initially denied knowledge of his arrest.
The family later discovered videos allegedly showing Ogidi’s arrest and fatal shooting after circulating his photograph online as a missing person.
Human rights advocates and civil society groups have since renewed calls for transparency, accountability, and prosecution of all officers involved in the killing.
The incident has also reignited public criticism over the long history of police brutality, unlawful killings, and abuse of power in Nigeria despite repeated promises of reforms after the 2020 #EndSARS protests.
