Traders and residents were thrown into panic on Wednesday evening after a massive fire outbreak gutted parts of the popular Tejuosho Market in Lagos State, destroying goods and properties reportedly worth millions of naira.
The fire, which affected sections of the busy commercial market in the Yaba area of Lagos, spread rapidly before emergency responders arrived at the scene.
Eyewitnesses and affected traders expressed frustration over what they described as a delayed response from firefighters despite the presence of a fire service office located close to the market.
According to witnesses, traders were forced to battle the flames themselves while desperately trying to rescue goods from burning shops and stalls.
“And to think that the Fire Service Office is just a few meters away,” an eyewitness lamented.
“I wonder why we can’t have a permanent fire service station within the market and barracks area with trained personnel and proper emergency equipment.”
Videos circulating online showed thick black smoke rising into the sky as frightened traders and residents gathered around the affected sections of the market.
Some traders were seen rushing to remove goods from nearby shops while others watched helplessly as flames consumed properties.
Tejuosho Market is one of Lagos State’s busiest commercial centres, known for large-scale trading activities involving clothing, electronics, household items, food products, and other consumer goods.
The incident has once again raised concerns over fire safety measures and emergency response systems in major markets across Lagos State.
As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the fire and the total value of destroyed properties had yet to be officially confirmed by authorities.
