The Forum of State Chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown its full weight behind the party’s National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki (SAN), and the National Working Committee (NWC), following a controversial judgment by the Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a joint press statement issued on Saturday, the forum, led by Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the PDP Edo State chapter, and Chief Edward Masha, Chairman of the PDP Kaduna State chapter, speaking on behalf of the 30 PDP state chairmen, expressed “total solidarity and unflinching support” for the party leadership.
The chairmen said they had carefully reviewed the court’s ruling and the official response of the NWC, noting that while the court declined the party’s request for a mandamus order, it granted reliefs “neither prayed for nor canvassed by any party before the court.” They also highlighted that the judgment appeared to conflict with earlier rulings from courts of coordinate jurisdiction on the same issue.
“It is reassuring that the party has already exercised its constitutional right of appeal and filed motions for a stay of execution, following established legal and democratic principles,” the statement added.
The forum stressed that the Ibadan court ruling is just “one step in an ongoing judicial process,” with substantive matters now before the Court of Appeal. It affirmed that the NWC produced by the Ibadan National Convention remains the “lawful, recognized, and operational leadership” of the PDP, enjoying the confidence of party structures across all 30 states.
The chairmen urged party members to remain calm and united, dismissing fears of a leadership vacuum. “There is absolutely no cause for panic. The PDP has faced challenges before and will emerge stronger from this situation,” the statement said.
Describing the ruling as “one of the judicial turns in our democratic journey, not the destination itself,” the forum reaffirmed its commitment to rebuilding and strengthening the PDP, promoting internal democracy, and positioning the party as a credible alternative to lead Nigeria.
“As we have always known, facts may be distorted, but truth is constant, and it will surely prevail,” the forum concluded.
