At least four residents of Gwargwaba village in the Nahuce District of Bungudu Local Government Area, Zamfara State, were brutally killed on Thursday evening after suspected bandits launched a deadly attack on the community, SUNTV Global Channel has gathered.
The attackers reportedly stormed the village at about 6:00 p.m., setting several houses ablaze and burning victims alive inside their homes. The assault left widespread destruction, with homes, food storage facilities, and livestock razed by fire.
Confirming the incident on Saturday, a security monitoring platform, Bakatsine, disclosed that four villagers lost their lives after being trapped in burning buildings during the raid.
According to the report, the attack was triggered by the community’s refusal to pay illegal levies imposed by the armed group. Such extortion, enforced through violence and intimidation, has become increasingly common in many rural communities across Zamfara State and the wider North-West region.
Bakatsine condemned the killings, warning that bandits are increasingly using arson and mass violence as punishment against villages that resist unlawful taxation. The platform questioned how long rural populations would continue to endure deadly reprisals simply for refusing to submit to extortion at gunpoint.
Zamfara State remains one of the epicentres of banditry in Nigeria, plagued by persistent attacks, kidnappings, killings, and destruction of property, despite ongoing military operations aimed at restoring peace and security in the region.
