AKURE, Nigeria — The Ondo State House of Assembly is expected to deliberate on the future of Speaker Olamide Oladiji and Deputy Speaker Ololade Gbegudu following their failure to resign amid allegations surrounding the handling of ₦44 million reportedly received from the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC).
According to sources within the Assembly, lawmakers are expected to take a decision during Tuesday’s plenary if both principal officers remain in office.
The controversy centres on allegations that the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and the Clerk of the House, Benjamin Jaiyeola, handled the funds without the knowledge of other members of the Assembly. Lawmakers also reportedly confirmed that the Assembly received the funds but alleged they were not informed about how the money was managed.
Sources further disclosed that members had earlier given the Speaker the opportunity to resign quietly in order to avoid a public debate on the allegations. However, after no resignation was submitted, lawmakers reportedly resolved to allow the matter to be discussed during plenary.
The Assembly is also said to be considering administrative action involving the Clerk of the House, with reports indicating that lawmakers have requested his redeployment.
The latest development comes months after Speaker Oladiji survived an impeachment attempt over separate allegations of financial misappropriation and the withholding of financial records—claims he previously denied, describing them as politically motivated.
As of the time of filing this report, Speaker Olamide Oladiji, Deputy Speaker Ololade Gbegudu, and Clerk Benjamin Jaiyeola had not publicly responded to the latest allegations.
