ABUJA, Nigeria — The vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has disclosed that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed a written agreement committing to serve only one four-year term if elected President in the 2027 general election.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Kwankwaso said the arrangement was formally documented to demonstrate the commitment of both leaders as part of the party’s strategy ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
According to him, separate written agreements were signed by both himself and Obi, describing the pact as a clear expression of mutual trust and commitment to the party’s political roadmap.
Kwankwaso said the agreement forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen opposition unity and improve the coalition’s chances in the 2027 presidential election.
He also expressed confidence in the party’s supporters, stating that they are motivated by conviction and are committed to safeguarding their votes during the electoral process.
On speculation about his political future beyond 2027, Kwankwaso declined to confirm whether he intends to seek the presidency in 2031, saying the party’s immediate focus remains on the 2027 general election.
The reported one-term agreement has continued to generate public debate, with supporters describing it as a strategic move to promote political balance and opposition unity, while critics have questioned its legal and political implications.
As of the time of filing this report, Peter Obi had not publicly commented on Kwankwaso’s disclosure regarding the reported written one-term agreement.
