The United States has launched a fresh wave of airstrikes against Iranian military targets, intensifying tensions in the Gulf amid ongoing attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation was carried out at approximately 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday, targeting Iranian military command centres, missile and drone launch sites, maritime assets, and air defence systems.
CENTCOM said the strikes were aimed at reducing Iran’s capacity to carry out further attacks on commercial shipping and safeguarding freedom of navigation through one of the world’s most important maritime routes.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital global energy corridor, handling a significant portion of the world’s crude oil exports. Despite recent hostilities, commercial vessels have continued to navigate the waterway under heightened security.
U.S. military officials disclosed that since early May, American forces have helped secure the passage of nearly 900 commercial vessels carrying an estimated 450 million barrels of crude oil, underscoring the strategic importance of maintaining stability in the region.
CENTCOM further stated that U.S. forces remain on high alert and are prepared to respond to any actions that threaten civilian shipping or international maritime security.
Iran has condemned the latest strikes, accusing Washington of violating ceasefire understandings and insisting it will continue to defend what it describes as its strategic interests in the Strait of Hormuz.
The renewed military action marks another significant escalation in the standoff between the United States and Iran, raising fresh concerns over regional stability and the potential impact on global energy markets, where oil prices have already shown signs of increased volatility.
International observers continue to call for restraint and renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict from expanding further.
