Tension is rising in Ajuwon, Ogun State, after two men were detained by police over a dispute involving their landlord, with family members alleging that the matter is being wrongly treated as a criminal case.
The suspects, identified as Adegbayi Bayo and Oladipupo Idris, are currently being held at the Ajuwon Police Station following an altercation linked to a disagreement with their landlord.
According to a family representative who spoke to SaharaReporters, multiple witnesses, including other tenants and children in the area, insist that no physical assault took place during the incident. The family maintains that the matter is strictly civil in nature and should not have led to arrest or detention.
They allege that the situation escalated after the landlord claimed to have incurred medical expenses and demanded that the tenants pay a hospital bill, a claim the detainees and other residents strongly deny.
The family further expressed concern that the police may proceed to arraign the suspects in court despite what they describe as a lack of evidence of assault.
“There is no clear proof of any attack, yet they are being taken to court,” a family source said. “This appears to be an attempt to turn a civil disagreement into a criminal matter.”
Residents familiar with the case also questioned the involvement of law enforcement in what they believe should be a landlord-tenant civil dispute.
The detainees’ relatives added that they are struggling to secure legal representation due to financial constraints and have called for urgent intervention to ensure due process is followed.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the Ogun State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report, as calls and messages to the command’s spokesperson went unanswered.
