The United Arab Emirates has announced a nationwide shift to online learning for both public and private schools following rising security concerns linked to recent drone and missile activity in the region.
The Ministry of Education confirmed that all schools will temporarily conduct classes remotely, as authorities prioritize the safety of students, teachers, and school personnel amid ongoing aerial threats. The directive is expected to remain in place until at least Friday, May 8, 2026, when officials will review the security situation and determine whether further extension is necessary.
According to official statements reported by Al Jazeera, the decision was taken as precautionary measures intensified after air defence systems were activated across several parts of the country in response to suspected incoming drones and missiles.
The UAE Ministry of Defence stated that its air defence units intercepted multiple aerial targets, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, as part of efforts to protect critical infrastructure and civilian areas.
In Fujairah, local authorities confirmed that a drone strike triggered a fire at an oil facility. Emergency response teams were quickly deployed and successfully contained the blaze. Officials reported no casualties from the incident.
While tensions continue to rise in the region, authorities have not released further details regarding responsibility for the attacks, and there has been no official response from Iran at the time of reporting.
The UAE government emphasized that the temporary transition to remote learning is aimed at ensuring continuity in education while safeguarding lives, as regional security developments continue to unfold.
