The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has called on the Federal Government to take decisive action against rising insecurity in Zamfara State, warning that routine condemnations and expressions of sympathy are no longer enough following the reported killing of at least 23 farmers by suspected bandits in Talata Mafara Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the coalition described the attack in Sauna District as a tragic reminder of the worsening security situation confronting rural communities across Northern Nigeria.
According to the group, the victims were attacked while working on their farmlands, underscoring what it described as the growing threat posed by armed criminal groups to farming communities and the nation’s food security.
“The killing of innocent farmers is unacceptable. These were law-abiding citizens striving to provide food for their families and contribute to the country’s agricultural production,” the statement said.
The coalition expressed condolences to the families of the victims, the people of Sauna District and the Zamfara State Government, while urging authorities to move beyond public statements and implement concrete security measures.
CNG stressed that the attack came during the peak of the farming season, warning that continued violence could discourage farmers from cultivating their land, resulting in lower agricultural output, worsening food shortages, rising food prices and increased economic hardship.
The group called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies to intensify coordinated military and intelligence operations across Zamfara and other states affected by banditry.
It also urged the Zamfara State Government to strengthen collaboration with federal security agencies, traditional rulers and local communities to improve intelligence gathering, surveillance and rapid response to security threats.
According to the coalition, government should establish a sustained security presence around vulnerable farming communities, major agricultural corridors and rural access roads throughout the farming season to enable farmers to carry out their activities without fear.
The group further called for immediate humanitarian assistance for affected families, including medical care, psychological support and economic relief, while demanding the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attack.
CNG warned that every attack on farmers represents not only a human tragedy but also a direct threat to Nigeria’s economy, food security and national stability.
“This is not the time for routine condemnations or official sympathies. It is time for decisive, intelligence-driven and sustained security operations that restore confidence to rural communities and ensure Nigerians can live and work without fear,” the coalition stated.
The latest appeal follows reports of a deadly attack on farmers in Talata Mafara Local Government Area, an incident that has drawn widespread condemnation from civil society organisations and renewed calls for stronger security measures across Nigeria’s North-West.
