Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana is set to defend Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi Mathew, who is facing multiple criminal charges, including conspiracy, forgery, impersonation, and the alleged use of forged presidential documents.
Adeyemi recently made headlines after accusing the Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, of demanding ₦400 million and an additional ₦200 million to facilitate his appointment as the head of a government agency.
He also alleged that Gbajabiamila demanded 48 percent of the agency’s proposed take-off grant, valued at ₦27.4 billion, and called on the Presidency to establish an independent panel to investigate the allegations, including a forensic examination of official documents signed by the Chief of Staff.
However, the Presidency dismissed the claims, insisting that investigations had already established that Adeyemi was never appointed by President Tinubu or any government authority.
According to the State House, records from the Office of the Chief of Staff, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and the Nigeria Police Force indicate that Adeyemi allegedly forged official documents to present himself as the Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), which the government says does not exist.
The Federal Government has since filed an eight-count charge against Adeyemi before the Federal High Court in Abuja. The charges include conspiracy, forgery, false personation, and the alleged use of forged presidential appointment letters and official State House documents.
Two other suspects, identified only as Femi and Anu, who are currently at large, were also named in the charge.
Police investigations allege that Adeyemi operated from an office within the Federal Secretariat Complex in Abuja while presenting himself as the head of the purported agency. Authorities also claimed that several forged official documents, including presidential appointment letters, official letterheads, and correspondence bearing fake signatures and government seals, were recovered during searches of his office and residence.
Investigators further alleged that financial intelligence revealed the suspect maintained 34 active bank accounts across several commercial banks and had also opened an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria under the name of the alleged agency.
Sources familiar with the case disclosed that Falana will lead Adeyemi’s legal defence as the matter proceeds before the Federal High Court.
The case is expected to attract significant public attention as legal proceedings continue, given the bribery allegations made against the Chief of Staff and the Federal Government’s counterclaims of forgery and impersonation.
