The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially reopened key border routes in Kebbi State linking the country with the Republics of Benin and Niger, marking a major step toward restoring cross-border trade and economic cooperation.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kebbi Area Command, announced the reopening of the Kamba and Tsamiya border posts located in Dandi and Bagudo Local Government Areas, respectively. The borders had earlier been shut due to rising insecurity along the border corridors.
Speaking during the reopening on Monday, the Customs Area Comptroller in Kebbi State, Mahmud Matawalle Ibrahim, disclosed that the decision followed extensive diplomatic engagements and security agreements between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, with approval from President Bola Tinubu.
According to him, the reopening allows the movement of legitimate goods from the Tsamiya border into the Niger Republic through the Kamba border, easing months of disruption to lawful trade activities.
He added that several trucks previously stranded on the Benin side of the border have now been officially cleared at Tsamiya and permitted to proceed to Tunga Jado border in Niger via Kebbi State.
Ibrahim noted that the renewed border operations are expected to boost bilateral trade, enhance regional cooperation, and improve joint security efforts, as all parties involved have committed to upholding the agreements reached.
The reopening is seen as a relief to traders and transporters who depend heavily on the trans-border routes for commerce and livelihoods, while authorities reaffirmed their resolve to maintain strict monitoring to prevent criminal activities.
