A shocking medical incident in Ogun State has raised fresh concerns about healthcare standards in Nigeria, after a woman narrowly avoided a serious health crisis caused by an alleged false scan result issued by a private laboratory.
The error came to light when the woman sought a second opinion at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), where a fresh examination reportedly revealed the correct diagnosis—contradicting the initial result that could have led to dangerous medical consequences.
Following the discovery, the Ogun State Police Command swiftly intervened, leading to the arrest of the laboratory operators involved.
The incident was made public by the Elegant Nurses Forum in a statement released on Thursday by its National Coordinator, Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide. The group warned that such negligence could have resulted in life-threatening complications if left unchecked.
“The woman later proceeded to the Federal Medical Centre, where another scan confirmed the accurate diagnosis,” the statement noted, highlighting the critical role of second opinions in medical care.
Describing the situation as alarming, the forum said the case reflects deeper systemic failures within Nigeria’s healthcare sector, calling for urgent reforms.
“This incident underscores the need for professionalism, accountability, and stricter regulatory oversight across medical laboratories,” the group stated.
The forum confirmed that the victim has been invited by the police to provide a formal statement as investigations continue.
While commending the police for their prompt response, the group urged authorities to ensure justice is served and to take decisive steps toward restoring public confidence in healthcare services.
